• Resumen

  La historia ambiental se ocupa de las interacciones entre las sociedades humanas y el mundo natural, y de las consecuencias para ambas partes a lo largo de! tiempo. Aquí se propone un marco de referencia para el estudio de estas interacciones en Panamá, que facilite comprender el origen de los problemas ambientales que enfrenta el país. Tras caracterizar las ecorregiones del Istmo, se examina el impacto ambiental de estrategias sucesivas de relación humana con el medio natural, desde el poblamiento inicial y el desarrollo de la agricultura hasta la irrupción europea en los ecosistemas del Istmo, y el desarrollo de la economía de tránsito interoceánico. En cada caso, el análisis es referido a las tecnologías utilizadas y las relaciones sociales correspondientes; a sus expresiones en el plano de las percepciones culturales de ia naturaleza, y a las formas de organización del territorio.

• Abstract

  Environmental History studies the interactions betwecn human societies and the natural world, and the consequences for both along lime. A framework for the study of these interactions in Panama, in order to facilítate the comprehension of the origins of the environmental problems the country faces today. After a general characterization of the ecoregions of the Isthmus. the environmental impact of the main successive human stratcgies of relation with the natural world is examined. from the original population and the transition to agricultura, to the European irruption in the country's ecosistems and the development of an interoceanic transit based economy. In each case, the analysis is refeiTed to the technologies and social relations involved. their expressions in the cultural perceptions of nature, and the ways of organizing the territory.
