SOBRE LOS FUNDAMENTOS DE LA IDENTIDAD NACIONAL MEXICANA CONTEMPORÁNEA: LOS DEBATES EN TORNO AL MESTIZAJE

Resumen
A partir del siglo XVI, la América ibérica se construyó en base al establecimiento de un sistema social segregativo que yuxtaponía dos entidades étnicas: las llamadas Repúblicas de Indios y de Españoles. Los mestizos o los mulatos, a pesar de gozar de la libertad, no se beneficiaban de ninguna existencia legal. En México, si la independencia llegó a derrumbar dicho edificio jurídico colonial, ello no significó en la práctica social la desaparición de las fronteras socio-raciales establecidas desde siglos atrás, pero sí favoreció, a lo largo del siglo XIX, un debate en torno a la conformación de la nueva nación surgida de la independencia política, obligando a pensar el mestizaje. Con la Revolución, esta reflexión desembocó en una exaltación de dicha realidad mestiza, proceso en el cual la obra de José Vasconcelos, muy especialmente La Raza Cósmica, marcó un verdadero hito.

From 16lh to 19'h century, Ibero America was constructed on the basis of the establishment of a segregative social system juxtaposed to two identified ethnic organizations: the so called Indians Republic and the Spaniards one. Ali those that were not framed within these legal bordéis, «mestizos» or «mulatos», in spite of enjoying the freedom, did not benefits of any lega! existence. In México, if independence got to collapse this colonial legal building, by the way quickly disconnected of ali reality, it actually did not mean the disappearance of the established partner-racial borders from centuries back. Nevertheless, the independenc e favored, throughout 19>h century, a debate around the conformation of the new nation, forcing to think the miscegenation. With the Revolution, this debate ended with an apotheosis of this racially mixed reality, process in which the work of José Vasconcelos, veiy specially La Raza Cósmica (Cosmic Race), marked a true landmark.
