LOS GRANDES INDUSTRIALES DE BUENOS AIRES: SUS PATRONES DE CONSUMO E INVERSIÓN, Y SU LUGAR EN EL SENO DE LAS ELITES ECONÓMICAS ARGENTINAS, 1870-1914

Resumen
Los grandes empresarios industriales de la Argentina exportadora constituyen figuras poco conocidas que la literatura especializada ha tratado superficialmente. Una visión tradicional sugiere que los dueños de fábricas conformaban un sector subordinado del empresariado, incapaz de rivalizar en riqueza, poder e influencia con los grandes terratenientes pampeanos. En las últimas décadas, esta interpretación fue objeto de críticas por parte de historiadores que conciben a los mayores capitalistas industriales como parte de una gran elite de negocios cuyos intereses se extendían por el campo tanto como por la ciudad. Este trabajo sugiere que ambas interpretaciones presentan limitaciones. A partir del análisis de inventarios sucesorios, el artículo presenta información original y muy confiable sobre los patrones de inversión, el tamaño de las fortunas y los patrones de consumo de algunos de los mayores empresarios industriales del período 1870- 1914. Esta información es utilizada para volver sobre el debate en torno a la posición económica y social de los empresarios industriales de la Argentina exportadora.

Argentina’s largest manufacturers of the export-led era have received scant scholarly attention. Traditionally, industrial entrepreneur have often been regarded as far less powerful and influent than large landowners. In recent decades, however, this interpretation has been called into question by scholars that argued that the economic interests of the wealthiest Argentine capitalists encompassed both rural and urban interests. The evidence produced in this article suggests that both interpretations require revision. Sucesiones (probate records), a very reliable source of information, are used to analyse the patterns of investment, the size of the fortunes and the patterns of consumption of some of the largest industrialistas of the 1870-1914 period. Contrasting views on the economic and social position of the industrial entrepreneurs of the export-led period are reconsidered under the light shed by the findings based on sucesiones.
