• Resumen

  En la obra El cristianismo católico [...] de Félix Frías, encontramos un modelo de aplicación del catolicismo liberal adaptado a las especificidades de América Latina. El autor formuló el concepto “plebe americana” para enmarcar a los pueblos indígenas que, incorruptos, debían tomar ese pensamiento de la enseñanza de la Iglesia y propagarlo por todo el país, convirtiéndose así, al mismo tiempo, en productores agrícolas y en vectores de una sociedad ideal. En el fondo, se estaba hablando de legitimar el Estado a través de la Iglesia y así perpetuar la existencia y las buenas relaciones de ambos, pero también de acabar con el “problema” indígena, preocupación recurrente en la dicotomía civilización / barbarie, que recorrió la región durante el siglo XIX. Por ello, en este artículo abordo de forma central la obra de Frías en cuestión, analizándola y usando la bibliografía para situar su importancia en relación con el proceso de construcción del Estado y la expansión del pensamiento católico-liberal.

• Abstract

  In Félix Frías’ El cristianismo católico [...], we find a model for the application of liberal Catholicism adapted to the Latin America’s specificities. The author formulated the concept “plebe americana” to frame the indigenous people who, uncorrupted, had to take that thought through the Church’s teaching and propagate it throughout the country, thus becoming, at the same time, agricultural producers, and vectors of an ideal society. Basically, the text discusses how to legitimise the State through the Church and thus perpetuate either the existence and a good relationship between both, but also how to end the indigenous “problem”, a recurring concern in the civilization / barbarism dichotomy that ran through the region during the nineteenth century. For this reason, in this article I focus on this Frías’ work, examining it and using bibliography to situate its importance in relation to the process of state-building and the expansion of Catholic-liberal thought.
